The Park lies on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Kigoma Region, Tanzania. It is named after the Mahale Mountains and is a home to the largest known population of Wild chimpanzees. It is the only place where chimpanzees and lions exist together. Another unique characteristic of the park is that there are no roads within the park boundaries. The only way to commute in or out the park is boat on the lake.
The main attractions of the park are the Chimpanzees, Forest's Fauna and flora(the Forest birds, red-tailed and blue monkeys, alpine bamboo, Angola Columbus) , the Mahale range of Mountains, Beach along lake Tanganyika and the Sunset on the lake horizon.
The Chimpanzee Trek in the Mahale on the shores of the Lake Tanganyika is a magical experience. The sports fishing in Lake Tanganyika with over 1000 species of fish is truly an amazing fun for lifetime. Hiking to the Park's highest point "Nkungwe" is the local Tongwe people's first choice. The Camping Safaris are a thrilling adventure.
July to October is considered as the best time to visit the Mahale Mountains. This being the dry season is less prone to mosquitoes and has abundant sunshine. The Chimpanzees can easily be found on the low mountain slopes while from November to may, due to the wet season, the forest trail becomes slippery and thus, hard to travel. The waterfalls are at their full flow but as the chimpanzee move to higher ground, they become harder to spot.
The park has bandas as well as luxury tented camps owned by the private investors. There are five bandas and three private owned facilities. Bandas are suitable for budget travellers and students while the tented camps offer luxury stay and are a little high on cost.
